Despite this, the story story explores the humanity of someone who never existed as Angela feels a deep connection to Estelle. A jazz singer in the 1920s, Estelle’s story is a tragic tale of what happens when the thing you love most goes hand in hand with your greatest source of pain. Trapped in an abusive relationship with the owner of the club where she performs, Estelle struggles to navigate the power dynamics of race, gender and social class as broken systems enable her harm.
